The Ministry of Transport confirmed that the suspended train project is still ongoing and has become an integral part of the Baghdad Metro project, pointing out that it will not conflict with the infrastructure or the main streets.
The Ministry’s Director General of Railways, Younis Al-Kaabi, said, “Our directorate is supportive of the Baghdad Metro project, which the Baghdad Municipality will take over, and we will be with the supporting parties,” noting that “the Railways Directorate has experience extending for decades, whether in implementation or operation.”
He added, “The suspended train has become one of the seven axes in Baghdad,” pointing out that “the name metro is given to all trains within cities, whether suspended, elevated on bridges, or underground.”
He stated, “The Baghdad Metro was based on the old route that started from the city of Al-Shaab to the city of Al-Kadhimiya and Al-Alawi, and other routes were added to it to cover the largest possible area of Baghdad,” pointing out, “This giant project requires infrastructure, giant companies, and an international effort.” In order to fulfill all these steps, but this does not prevent us from moving forward with this project.”
He stated, “The suspended train project still exists, and it is a cultural part of Baghdad. The advantage of suspended trains is that they do not conflict with the infrastructure and do not interfere with the movements of citizens in the streets, as they extend across the central islands, of which we have many in the capital, where we can extend suspension bridges to pass them.” Above them are the tracks of these trains that do not conflict with main intersections and streets and can provide service to the citizen.”
