The Ministry of Agriculture announced that it had issued approvals and allowed the import of 17,000 heads of calves from well-known international origins to Iraq, and while it indicated that the high prices of red meat were unjustified, it confirmed that it had developed solutions to this issue.
Director General of the Department of Animal Wealth, Walid Muhammad Razouki, said, “One company has been approved and allowed to enter 17,000 calf heads from well-known origins, namely Brazil, Ecuador, and Colombia,” stressing that they are “with very good specifications and high quality.”
He added, “Import requests for these livestock will increase significantly as a result of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Department of Livestock, and the Veterinary Department allowing freedom of import from well-known countries. This issue will continue and will contribute significantly to the decline in meat prices to acceptable levels for the Iraqi citizen.”
Razouki explained, “The increase witnessed in local markets in meat prices is unjustified, and according to actual statistics conducted by the Ministry, the cost of one kilogram is 10,000 Iraqi dinars,” stressing, “Measures are continuing to control prices.”
In the same context, the Director General of the Department of Animal Wealth stated, “Through the statistics received from the directorates of agriculture and the Department of Livestock, Iraq’s meat production is approximately 320 thousand tons annually, while the actual need is 580 thousand tons,” noting that there is a definite production deficit. The Ministry will begin implementing its strategic plans, which will cover this deficit through imports.”
Razouki pointed out, “According to the Health Research Institute, which specializes in nutrition, 12 kg of meat should be sufficient for the Iraqi citizen annually, while actual statistics show that the Iraqi citizen exceeds 20 kg annually and that the global consumption rate of meat is 16 kg per capita annually.”
