The European Aviation Safety Agency extended the ban on the green bird for a new period of six months, bringing it into its tenth year, while the Ministry of Transport held the Aviation Authority responsible for a large part of it.
Director of the Ministry's Media Office, Maytham Al-Safi, explained that the Ministry had achieved 80 percent of the requirements of the International Aviation Organization regarding the file of lifting the European ban on Iraqi airlines. However, the European Air Safety Agency, after its last meeting, decided to continue the ban for six months, entering its tenth year, pointing out that since The year 2015, airlines, in coordination with the Civil Aviation Authority and the American company (Boeing), sought to lift the ban on the green bird, especially during the last two years, after the government paid special attention to this file and developed the air transport sector, by fulfilling international maintenance requirements for development and cleanliness.
He pointed out that his ministry initiated a comprehensive plan to study cooperation with the World Bank’s IFS Foundation, which presented three options: the first is to build a new airport that currently exists, the second is to rehabilitate it, and the third is to expand it by building a new passenger lounge to accommodate the expected increase until the year 2036, to become Baghdad International Airport's capacity is about nine million passengers annually.
Al-Safi blamed the Civil Aviation Authority for a large part of the delay in closing this file, since his ministry had taken all the relevant steps and committees in this regard, revealing that his ministry had opened several lines towards Europe based on the joint operating system with international airlines, including the Baghdad-Munich line and (Baghdad - Copenhagen) and (Baghdad - Frankfurt), while Iraqi Airways opened several destinations towards Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, and the Chinese city of Guangzhou
