    The Chairman of the Communications and Media Commission, Ali Al-Muayyad, revealed today, Thursday (July 18, 2024), record numbers in the use of mobile phone services in the holy city of Karbala during the first ten days of the month of Muharram, which witnessed the commemoration of Ashura.
    Al-Muayyad said in a statement received by Baghdad Today, "The number of mobile phone service users during the above period reached 24.563 million subscribers, including 23.256 million local subscribers and 1.306 million international subscribers."
    He added, "Ashura visitors made 95.536 million successful phone calls during this period, and users exchanged 46.622 million  SMS messages ."
    Al-Muayyad added, "The city of Karbala also recorded a significant increase in the volume of data transfer via mobile phone networks, as the total volume of data transferred reached 3,576 terabytes."
    He pointed out that "the largest part of this consumption, amounting to 2.999 million gigabytes, is allocated to social media networks and applications, as the TikTok application topped the list with 841,080 thousand gigabytes, followed by Facebook with 846,344 thousand gigabytes, then YouTube with 596,543 thousand gigabytes, then Instagram with 447,253 thousand gigabytes, and finally Telegram with 89,836 thousand gigabytes."
    He explained that "these numbers reflect the importance of telecommunications services in facilitating communication and interaction during major religious occasions, such as the Ashura pilgrimage, where visitors rely heavily on mobile phones and social media networks to stay in touch with their families and share their experiences."
    Al-Muayyad explained that "these figures indicate the success of the efforts of the Communications and Media Commission, in cooperation with the mobile phone companies operating in the country, in strengthening the infrastructure of communications networks in Karbala, and providing high-quality services to users during this busy period."
