    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Media professor Ahmed Abdul Sattar said today, Sunday (July 21, 2024), that there are loopholes that encourage advocates of sedition to continue their approach despite its danger to Iraqi society.
Abdul Sattar explained in an interview with Baghdad Today, "The law, in several texts, holds accountable those who advocate hate speech, racism, and incite sedition, but the penalties are merely limited financial fines and are not effective in a way that constitutes a strong deterrent against speeches that are sometimes like "tons" of explosives, given the crises they cause, which sometimes reach problems approaching blind sedition."
He added, "The Communications and Media Commission takes measures in accordance with the laws, but the penalties must be reconsidered in terms of deterrence, stressing that the media is one of the five most important means in raising society after the family and school, and it plays effective roles in shaping its orientations, especially with the tremendous development in communications and the emergence of platforms that attract different groups currently."
Abdul Sattar pointed out that "some are trying to confuse the issues through freedom of expression, but they forgot that this freedom is linked to not violating public morals or harming state security or encroaching on the privacy of others, noting that what we are seeing now is painful and the reason is the absence of penalties that rise to the principle of deterrence for the lives of advocates of sedition, racism and abuse of others."
