Parliamentary Committee points out defects in the agricultural sector and confirms: loss of some components

MP Thaer Al-Jubouri, a member of the Parliamentary Agriculture Committee, pointed out the factors of imbalance in the agricultural sector, while stressing that these factors have lost some of the components that allow the country to achieve self-sufficiency in agricultural crops.
Al-Jubouri stressed that “there are factors that have been available after a good increase in production, but if some of the components are lost, there will certainly be a defect in the agricultural sector in the country.” He pointed out that “the aspects that help increase production are the abundance of water in Iraq and how to exploit it, in addition to the fertility of the soil and the suitability of the climate for agricultural crops, in addition to the type of crop, fertilizers and pesticides, and these factors contribute to the process of good production of agricultural crops.”
Al-Jubouri explained that “when the government relies on correct plans, it will certainly achieve positive results. Evidence of this is its reliance this season on increasing wheat production in the country, which reached 6 million tons. This came for specific reasons, including providing organic and chemical fertilizers, sprinklers, irrigation methods, and exploiting wells in desert areas, which made the country increase production and lead it to self-sufficiency in wheat production.”
It is noteworthy that Iraq has suffered in recent years from severe drought seasons that have caused agricultural plans to be significantly reduced.
While the Ministry of Agriculture is working on issuing a new law for agricultural investments, in order to separate it from the rest of the laws pertaining to the ministry, it revealed the conclusion of more than 100 investment contracts with the private sector, and had previously announced the achievement of the marketing season goals for the 2024 wheat crop through the quantities of wheat marketed by farmers and cultivators, while it indicated the achievement of self-sufficiency and food security.
