Among them are “Baathists”.. Discontent with the mechanism for selecting Iraqi ambassadors and “questioning” the eligibility of candidates

Member of Parliament for the Coordination Framework, Ola Awda Al-Nashi, criticized the mechanism used by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, his deputies, and the Director of the Prime Minister’s Office regarding choosing new names for Iraqi ambassadors abroad.
“The ambassadors are the face of Iraq in front of the world and they are supposed to be chosen according to certain conditions and controls, the most important of which are competence, integrity and patriotism, but what happened is the opposite,” Al-Nashi’ said, adding, “After following up on the work of the committee tasked with nominating ambassadors, headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and including the Undersecretaries of the Ministry and the Director of the Prime Minister’s Office, Ihsan Al-Awadi, it became clear to us that most of those nominated on the list of ambassadors do not have competence and professionalism, and there are those who are included in accountability and justice issues and have affiliation with the dissolved Baath Party.”
Al-Nashi expressed her surprise, saying: “How can these people be trustworthy to Iraq’s word and how can they be defenders of the supreme national interests, at a time when the region and the world are going through exceptional and sensitive circumstances?”
The member of the House of Representatives expressed her fear for “Iraq’s reputation,” saying: “One of those who received and helped in the killing of Mustafa Al-Athari, holds the position of consul in one of the countries,” calling for “reconsidering these figures who were nominated based on favoritism, and choosing national figures with a good reputation and a clear career progression in the diplomatic corps.”
She also demanded that the committee assigned to this work be “reconstituted due to the illegality of its work,” revealing that “one of the committee members is a candidate on the list of names of candidates for the position of ambassador, and this is in violation of the law.”
The Shiite MP vowed to take a political and parliamentary stance towards these nominations, which she said “lack political balance and the terms and conditions for nominations approved by Iraqi law.”
It is noteworthy that the head of the Parliamentary Martyrs Committee, Hassan Salem, confirmed on Saturday (August 24, 2024) the existence of Baath Party infiltration into the joints of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Salem wrote in a post on the “X” platform, saying, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is still being eaten away by the Baath Party, which has infiltrated its ranks, and it must work to purge it of some who have no affiliation to the homeland.”
He added, "This is clear from many evidences, the latest of which is the meeting of the consul in Istanbul with one of the murderers and criminals and his honoring with a grand reception," stressing that "we will follow this play and will not remain silent or be lenient."
