ANTALYA,— Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has slammed the recent statement by the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, saying the U.S. ambassador in Turkey “is not a governor.”
“Some statements, especially coming from our allies, make us sad at a time when we are fighting against terrorism,” Cavusoglu said on Sept. 13 in his hometown Antalya.
“No elected official can be untouchable if they are aiding terrorists,” he added.

The U.S. Embassy on Sept. 11 released a statement on its website expressing concern about a government decision to replace 24 Kurdish mayors in Turkey’s Kurdish region in the country’s southeast with trustees, calling for early local elections as soon as possible.
Turkey has removed local 24 Kurdish mayors last Sunday deemed to support Kurdish militants and appointed new administrators in two dozen municipalities mostly in the largely Kurdish southeast.
“First of all, the method of such an interference cannot be accepted,” Cavusoglu said in response.
“We voice our concerns about issues in many countries, for example the rising racism in the U.S. The police have killed countless people in the U.S., but I don’t call my ambassador in Washington and tell him to make a statement. We voice our concerns directly to our American counterparts, this is just politeness,” he added.
The foreign minister also complained that “the Americans feel entitled to say anything.”

“None of you are the bosses of Turkey … If you want to have a strong relationship with Turkey, you will consider Turkey as an equal partner,” Cavusoglu said. “It is not a second-class country.”
Since July 2015, Turkey initiated a controversial military campaign against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party PKK in the country’s southeastern Kurdish region after Ankara ended a two-year ceasefire agreement. Since the beginning of the campaign, Ankara has imposed several round-the-clock curfews, preventing civilians from fleeing regions where the military operations are being conducted.
Observers say the crackdown has taken a heavy toll on the Kurdish civilian population and accuse Turkey of using collective punishment against the minority.
Activists have accused the security forces of causing huge destruction to urban centres and killing Kurdish civilians.

Pro-Kurdish opposition political parties say about 1,000 civilians, mostly Kurds, have perished in the fighting, since the Turkish offensive against the PKK centred in towns and cities in Turkish Kurdistan.
The PKK took up arms in 1984 against the Turkish state, which still denies the constitutional existence of Kurds, to push for greater autonomy for the Kurdish minority who make up around 22.5 million of the country’s 78-million population. A large Turkey’s Kurdish community openly sympathise with PKK rebels.
