[ltr]The US government said it would allow about 7,000 Syrians to stay in the United States for at least another 18 months under protection status as the civil war in their country intensified.[/ltr]
[ltr]Syrians were facing the prospect of returning to a war-torn country if the US administration scraped their temporary protection status when it expires in March.[/ltr]
[ltr]The US decision allows them to stay until September 30, 2019.[/ltr]
[ltr]"After careful consideration of the situation on the ground, I decided it was necessary to extend the temporary protection status for Syria," US Homeland Security Secretary Christine Nielsen said in a statement.[/ltr]
[ltr]"It is clear that the conditions on which the classification of Syria is based are still in place, and therefore the law guarantees extension."[/ltr]
[ltr]The US administration has not yet reached a re-categorization of the situation of Syria, which means that the resolution will benefit only Syrians in the United States since 2016 or earlier.[/ltr]
[ltr]"I did not expect them to be reclassified, but I think it is nevertheless a positive measure that deserves commendation," said Munther, a 21-year-old Syrian student at the University of Iowa who enjoys temporary protection status.[/ltr]
[ltr]"I am happy that this decision has now been made, and there is no need to worry about this for at least another 18 months," he said.[/ltr]
