US President Donald Trump has criticized Justice Minister Jeff Sessions on Saturday after the latter defended himself in the face of sharp criticism from the president for distancing himself from investigating allegations of Russia's intervention in the 2016 US presidential election.
In a rare response to Trump, Sessions said on Thursday: "I took over the Justice Department the day I took the oath of office. The ministry's actions will not be affected by political considerations as long as I am in the post of justice minister."
"I do not understand what is going on under his leadership," Trump said in a snatch on Saturday.
Special investigator Robert Mueller, who leads the investigation into Russian intervention, said he was "deeply troubled", adding that "real corruption goes unaccountable."
Sessions, a former Alabama senator, was one of the first Republicans in Congress to support Trump in the presidential election and has implemented his tough immigration policies after he took over as justice minister.
But Trump repeatedly criticized him for deflecting himself from the investigation into the Russian intervention, including when he criticized him in a Fox News interview, saying that Sessions "never ruled things in the ministry."
Trump denies any complicity with Moscow, describing Muller's investigation as a deliberate campaign against him.
The heated situation between the president and the justice minister has sparked new speculation about the possible sacking of Sessions
