Direct: North Korea and its southern neighbor decided to start reconnecting railways and roads on the borders of the two Koreas, in a move that would improve the relations between the two parties.
A joint communique issued by the Unification Ministry said Monday that the two Koreas reached agreement after serious discussions on plans of action to develop their relations to a new stage.
The two Koreas also agreed to hold a groundbreaking ceremony in late November or early December to begin work on re-linking railway and road lines that have been suspended since the 1950-53 Korean War.
The two sides decided to conduct a joint field study soon to review the current status of inter-Korean railway lines, according to the statement.
The agreement between the two Koreas came during talks in the border village of Panmunjom as part of the resumption of the third summit this year between South Korean President Mon Jae-un and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un last month.
They also agreed to discuss a plan to pursue an attempt to host the 2032 Olympics, later this month.
But the move would threaten to provoke US anger after President Donald Trump rejected Seoul's proposal last week to consider easing bilateral sanctions against North Korea, saying South Korea could only lift restrictions against Pyongyang with US approval.
