Newspaper reports revealed the position of the Emir of Qatar , Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, from attending the upcoming Gulf summit in Riyadh on Sunday.

"The Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad, will not participate in the 39th GCC summit, which is expected to be held Sunday in the Saudi capital of Riyadh," the Anatolia news agency quoted an official Qatari source as saying .

Qatari businessman Adel Ali bin Ali said Qatar's Foreign Minister Sultan bin Saad al-Muraikhi would head Qatar's delegation during the summit.

Al-Sharq Al-Awsat correspondent Jaber Al-Haremi also said that Qatar's Minister of Foreign Affairs will head the Qatari delegation during the summit.

The Riyadh summit comes amid an ongoing Gulf crisis since mid-2017 following the severing of Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain as well as Egypt's relations with Qatar.

Earlier in the day, the Qatari daily Al-Sharq reported that Prince Tamim was not participating in the Gulf summit.

She said that "all indications indicate that the Qatari prince will not be at the head of the Qatari delegation at the Riyadh summit tomorrow."

On Tuesday, the emir of Qatar received a written message from Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz for his invitation to attend the summit, the official Qatar News Agency reported.

Doha has yet to officially announce its level of representation in the summit.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt have cut ties with Qatar since June 2017 and imposed "punitive measures" on them.

The four countries accuse Qatar of "supporting terrorism," which Doha denies, and accuses the Quartet of seeking to "impose guardianship over the Qatari national decision."
