Iraqi Defense Minister Najah al-Shammari said on Sunday that his country would not allow attacks on international coalition forces and diplomatic missions and would not allow a military operation from its territory.
This came on the sidelines of his meeting with US special envoy for Iraq and Syria, Jim Jeffrey, according to a statement of the Iraqi Ministry of Defense, read the site Kalima news.
According to the statement, during the meeting, "discussed the continued support and support for the armed forces, which carry out continuous operations in areas where the presence of elements calling."
The statement said that the US envoy "praised" the actions of Iraqi forces in the fight against terrorism, stressing his country's respect for "Iraq's sovereignty and military and political decisions on its territory."
The statement quoted the Iraqi Defense Minister as saying that his country would not allow its territory to be used for any military operation nor would it allow the attack on the international coalition forces led by the United States and the diplomatic missions operating in Iraq.
In another meeting, Iraqi President Barham Salih met with Jeffrey and US Ambassador to Baghdad Matthew Taylor, calling for "the need to find a settlement of the political situation in the region."
According to a statement by the Iraqi presidency, Saleh stressed during the meeting the importance of "adopting a positive dialogue between all parties to resolve outstanding issues and crises in a way that helps consolidate the foundations of world peace."
He pointed out that "Iraq seeks to adopt a balanced policy with all, aimed at bringing the views of the countries of the region, to ease the current tension."
Iraq supports political efforts to contain the political and security crisis between Tehran and Washington, and calls for the exclusion of the region from the specter of war.
After three years of fighting, with the support of the International Coalition, Baghdad announced, in late 2017, victory over the "da'ash" and the restoration of the territory it controlled, amounting to one third of Iraq's territory.
But the terrorist organization still has pockets in Iraq, and it launches occasional attacks from time to time, as it did before 2014.
