An Iraqi military official on Monday unveiled a huge budget for the establishment of a naval military base in the port of Faw al-Kabir in Basra province.
"The base will be inside Iraq's territorial waters in the Gulf between Iran and Kuwait, and will work to secure Iraqi sovereignty over its international waters and to protect Iraq's southern port," the official said.
"The Ministry of Defense allocated a huge budget to establish the base, which will be the first of its kind since 1990, and there is a program of arming the Iraqi Navy."
"The naval base will be the beginning to develop the level of the Iraqi Navy, to be ambitious, to carry out its naval military duties, and the project to establish the naval base is not new, but the ministry completed its procedures and obtained approvals and government support.
The naval force is one of the components of the Iraqi army, and includes more than 5,000 sailors and marines, who follow the operational headquarters of 5 squadrons and two naval battalions.
Iraq overlooks the Arabian Gulf, through the province of Basra, which is the only port of Iraq, which is currently working on the construction of the port project Faw.
