The President of the Republic, Barham Saleh, said that the country's authorities will support the formation of a committee of independent experts of personalities known for efficiency and integrity, and open the door for constructive dialogue with the demonstrators.
"We must all be honest because these protests came against the backdrop of misery and the general feeling of the country's need for reform," Saleh said in a televised address, commenting on demonstrations in Iraq in recent days.
"Immunizing our country from conspiracies comes from our people's satisfaction and responsibility in building the country," he added.
He pointed out that "our people suffer from poor services, unemployment and lack of employment opportunities," adding that "the Iraqi economy has been depleted due to security challenges, but also financial and administrative corruption hampered the chances of progress and reduced the chances of progress of our people, in addition to the presence of partisan and factional quotas."
The President stressed that "a judicial investigation into the causes of violence will be opened during the past days and identify serious mechanisms to face this kind of protests and not to use excessive force and protect the right of the citizen to demonstrate peacefully."
He continued that "in response to the invitation of the Marjaiya, we will work to support the formation of a committee of independent experts of personalities known for competence and integrity and open the door for constructive dialogue with the demonstrators, and we will work to ensure that this national consensus and provide the necessary atmosphere for its work without political interference."
He stressed that "the outputs of the Committee will be considered for periods of time, a binding road map to proceed, and the presidency will put all its possibilities for the success of this aspect."
