Did the renewal of the mandate for Al-Halbousi open the door to Saleh’s return? The National Union commented
The leader of the Union, Ghiath al-Sorji, told Shafaq News Agency, "There is no relationship or connection between the return of the President of the Republic, Barham Salih to a second term, after the renewal of the mandate of the Iraqi Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi," noting that "each issue has its own status and has no any relationship to each other.”
And Al-Sorji indicated that "the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Egypt, is determined to renew the second term of the President of the Republic, Barham Salih," stressing that he is "the Union's only candidate for this position."
He added that the position "is an entitlement to the Kurdish component," noting that "we will continue dialogues with all political parties in the region and Baghdad in order to support Saleh's second term."
Earlier today, informed political sources told Shafaq News that a delegation from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan headed by Pavel Talabani will head to Baghdad, to engage in discussions with the "Shiite and Sunni" parties about the party's candidate for the presidency, Barham Salih.
And the Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan decided to approve the candidacy of Barham Salih for the position of the Presidency of the Republic, for a second term.
Earlier, leaders of the National Union told Shafaq News that they "stick" to re-nominating Barham Salih for the presidency, as the Kurdistan Democratic Party's opposition indicated.
