Barzani's advisor: This is what we expect from the coordination framework regarding the election of Zebari
Shafaq News/ An advisor to Kurdish leader Massoud Barzani, head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, said on Tuesday that the party expects the coordination framework to vote for Hoshyar Zebari as president of the republic in response to Barzani's initiative to contain the political crisis in the country.
Masoud Haidar said in a tweet on Twitter, "We expect the coordination framework as a response to President Barzani's initiative and the positive positions of the leader of the Sadrist movement Muqtada al-Sadr and the efforts of the Sunni component led by Muhammad al-Halbousi and Khamis al-Khanjar, to have a positive position and to take a step forward and vote for Hoshyar Zebari for the presidency."
Barzani had put forward an initiative to contain the government formation crisis, according to which a meeting was held at the residence of the leader of the Sadrist movement in Najaf, which included the latter, along with the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, Iraqi Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi and the leader of the "sovereignty" coalition Khamis al-Khanjar.
The meeting discussed bridging the gap between political forces, especially Shiite ones, regarding the formation of the next Iraqi government.
The Iraqi parliament is scheduled to elect a new president for the country by a two-thirds majority on February 8, from among 25 candidates who applied to fill the position.
The competition is limited to Saleh, who is the candidate of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan led by Bafel Talabani, and Hoshyar Zebari, the candidate of the Kurdistan Democratic Party led by Massoud Barzani.
According to the political custom followed throughout the previous sessions, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan has held the position of President of the Republic since the overthrow of the previous regime in 2003.
But in terms of numbers, the fact that the Kurdistan Democratic Party won 31 parliamentary seats in the recent legislative elections, compared to only 17 seats for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, may reverse the equation this time.
