From Ms. Shema Sen Gupta, UNICEF Representative in Iraq

Baghdad,  February  2022  – “Four children (3 boys and one girl) were killed and two others lost their limbs, during the past week, as a result of accidents related to explosive ordnance in two different locations in Iraq. On this painful occasion, UNICEF expresses its deepest regret and sympathy to the children's families, friends and communities.
“Unfortunately, as  [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] , this is not an isolated case of child loss – in 2021, 125 children were killed or maimed as a result of explosive remnants of war and unexploded ordnance. Among them, 52 children, 73 children were disabled. There is a need for more concerted efforts to reduce the impact of these explosives, especially on boys, as the number of child casualties increased by 67% compared to 2020 (79 children in the mentioned year, including 61 boys).
“These events took place in the governorates of Babil and Baghdad, when children were performing their daily tasks, such as collecting firewood. UNICEF also reminds all stakeholders that the need to keep children safe must remain a primary consideration in all circumstances. ERW remains a major cause of civilian casualties, with children being particularly vulnerable – their small size makes them more vulnerable to the full impact of an explosion, making them even more lethal.”
UNICEF continues to work on victim assistance, providing referral services for medical treatment, and psychosocial support when needed .
“ UNICEF urges all parties to accelerate and intensify all efforts to remove mines and unexploded ordnance, enhance victim assistance, and support children’s right to a safe and protected environment . ”
“UNICEF is also urging the Government of Iraq and the donor community to support the expansion and provision of explosive ordnance awareness activities so that children and other members of the community receive education about the dangers of explosive ordnance in schools and communities in all areas previously affected by the conflict in Iraq.
