Ambiguity surrounds the fate of the parliament session scheduled for today, Monday, to elect the new president of the republic. For the presidential position, the entire political process will enter into uncertainty and anticipation, despite the coordinating framework expecting a breakthrough at the last minute.
Despite the decision of the Federal Supreme Court to stop the procedures for the nomination of Hoshyar Zebari for the position of the presidency of the Iraqi Republic, no statement or reaction was issued by the Kurdistan Democratic Party, which presented Zebari as an official candidate, until the hour of preparing this report. The question remains: (Has the election session been suspended? The President of the Republic according to the jurisdictional order of the court? Or is it in the past and has nothing to do with it?).
A member of the House of Representatives from the Al-Fateh Alliance, Salem Al-Anbaki, said: “The name of the national majority on the next government is completely incorrect, as the conditions of the country do not allow this at all. He expected "a surprise with a solution that satisfies all parties in the coming hours."
For his part, a member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Tariq Jawhar, told Al-Sabah: “There is no election for the next president of the republic without there being an agreement between the coordination framework and the Sadrist bloc, and that the parliamentary session will not be held without the two parties agreeing to nominate the candidate for the next prime minister. The government and the government program and the share of each party in it, and otherwise the country will be in a constitutional breach,” stressing his party’s adherence to its candidate, Barham Salih, expecting surprises.
In the meantime, the representative of the state of law affiliated with the coordinating framework, Mahmoud al-Salami, said: “The coordinating framework with all its arms will be present today in Parliament, but he did not decide whether to enter the session or not, and if we do not reach consensus, the weightings indicate that the session will not be held.” In turn, the political analyst Bassam Al-Qazwini stated in an interview with “Al-Sabah” that “so far, the compass is moving towards holding the session, and there may be a change that will force the Presidency of the House of Representatives to postpone it until tomorrow, Tuesday, the eighth of February, which is constitutionally the last day in electing the President of the Republic and beyond. We will enter a constitutional vacuum.”
Political analyst Ghaleb Al-Daami told Al-Sabah: “Sayyed Al-Sadr will not accept the terms of the coordination framework for forming the government, but rather wants a majority government, and also does not want the political blocs to nominate personalities over whom there is confusion, and he is between public pressure and what is rumored from here and there from The Sadrist movement may support candidates for the post of President of the Republic who are not at the required level, so he decided to move away a little to rearrange the situation in the Shiite house and the Kurdish house exclusively.
Yesterday, Sunday, the House of Representatives published the agenda of the second session of the first legislative term of the first legislative year of the fifth electoral cycle, on Monday.
The council stated in a brief statement that “the session will start at 12 noon, and includes, after reading verses from the Holy Qur’an, taking the constitutional oath of some deputies, as well as electing the President of the Republic.”
