    [size=45]National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan affirmed in a statement today, Monday, the Iraqi government's support in holding Iran accountable, noting that his country stands behind Iraq's full sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, and stressing "the support of our partners in the Middle East in the face of Iranian threats."[/size]
    [size=45]The statement also stated that the United States stands with Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi and the leaders of the Kurdistan region, President Nechirvan Barzani, and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, in condemning this attack on the sovereignty of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.[/size]

    [size=45]On Sunday, Iran attacked the city of Erbil in northern Iraq, with twelve ballistic missiles, in an unprecedented attack on the capital of the Kurdistan region of Iraq.[/size]
    [size=45]Meanwhile, Iranian official media reported that the Iranian Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, and said that it targeted Israeli "strategic centers" in the city.[/size]

    [size=45]For its part, the Kurdistan Regional Government said that the missiles targeted the US consulate among other locations.[/size]
    [size=45]The Iraqi Foreign Ministry summoned the Iranian ambassador to Baghdad to protest the attack.[/size]

    No injuries

    [size=45]A US State Department spokesman described the incident as a "outrageous attack", but said that no Americans were hurt and no US government facilities in Erbil were damaged.[/size]
    [size=45]Also, the US ambassador to Iraq, Matthew H. Tueller condemned the attack, and said that "elements of the Iranian regime claimed responsibility for this attack, and they must be held accountable."[/size]

    [size=45]The last time American forces were attacked with ballistic missiles was in January 2020, in an Iranian response to the United States' assassination of Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani at Baghdad airport earlier that month.[/size]
