Baghdad/ Saif Abdullah
The industrial and commercial sector in Iraq is witnessing clear government neglect and a major economic stagnation, coinciding with the global crisis that occurred due to the Russian-Ukrainian war, which greatly affected trade between countries.
At a time when Iraq owns all the manufacturing and production components of the vital industrial and commercial sectors, but there is no real governmental will to change the reality of these two sectors and lift the youth out of unemployment.
The total number of factories affiliated with public sector companies in Iraq is about 227, and the number of workers is only 140, according to data from the Ministry of Industry and Minerals.
According to these data, about 18,167 industrial projects were suspended for various reasons, and the industrial sector constituted about 23% of the volume of Iraq's gross domestic product before 2003.
outside interference
In this regard, the Vice-President of the Baghdad Chamber of Commerce, Hassan Al-Sheikh, indicated that there is external interference that affected local industries and destroyed all factories.
In an exclusive interview with Al-Mada, the Sheikh said, “What is happening in the world is economic hegemony, and we do not forget that Iraq is surrounded by industrial countries such as Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, and therefore Iraq has turned into an industrial country, as it does not appeal to these countries, but rather they want Iraq to remain a market.” To dispose of its products, and in general it subsists on Iraq.”
He pointed out, "Industry can only be activated by a solid and experienced will, and the industry cannot thrive in such a situation, as we own in Iraq approximately 190 companies affiliated with the Ministry of Industry, some of which are losers, and approximately 50 factories that pay their wages only, and we also have private factories, but they are not supported and face obstacles." Many prevent it from competing globally.”
Big decline for industry and agriculture
Member of Parliament, Zahra Al-Bajari, confirmed that there is a significant decline in the performance of the ministries of industry and agriculture and the private sector.
Al-Bajari said in an interview with (Al-Mada), that "the decline in the performance of the two ministries greatly affected the economic reality of Iraq, even with the availability of oil, but the oil industries are absent in Iraq until the situation in Iraq reached the import of gasoline, and this decline was intentional and systematic."
Al-Bajari pointed out that “Iraq has a great financial abundance, but what we have noticed is the neglect of the agricultural and industrial sectors in all forms, whether paste and milk, which were previously widely available, but what is happening now is import only.”
And she continued, "We have working hands and raw materials, and unemployment has greatly affected the Iraqi youth, and therefore these energies can be invested in local industries," noting that "the current parliament has not yet fully met and the government has not been formed to know its curriculum and program and we are in our oversight role. We will closely follow up on the relevant authorities in this matter.”
There is no real will
Economic expert Salam Sumaisem confirmed the lack of a real will throughout the previous governments to revive Iraqi factories to get rid of the unemployment crisis and lift the Iraqi economy out of stagnation.
Sumaisem said in an interview with Al-Mada: “We now have two dangers threatening the Iraqi economy, namely unemployment and poverty, and they cannot be eliminated without employment that absorbs unemployment, and the incomes that are generated as a result of employing laborers will eliminate the issue of poverty and move the market because it directly affects demand. effective.”
Sumaisem explained, "We advise the state to work on opening these factories and activating social security with them, which is a very necessary thing, as there are global experiences and countries were creating issues of employing manpower. Unfortunately, many Iraqi factories were transferred to Syria, Iran, and Jordan because there is a suitable environment for them to produce electricity and materials Primarily affordable.
