Al-Husseini said, in an interview with “Sputnik”, followed by “Nas”, (March 31, 2023), about whether it was proven to the center that the American forces used ammunition containing depleted uranium during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, “Certainly, but there are no specific percentages because it is destructive mechanisms.

He explained, "As it is known, depleted uranium is used in weapons to facilitate the process of penetrating armor and armored vehicles, and usually the place where this armored vehicle is targeted gets polluted and the soil around it is polluted. This same mechanism and contaminated soil are dealt with, until we reach normal readings that match the radiation background." located in Iraq, and we say that this site is sanitized and we keep monitoring it.”

"Certainly one of the effects of this excessive use of this pollution was the increase in cancer cases in the southern regions of the country, especially in Basra Governorate," he added.

He pointed out that the Cancer Council of the Ministry of Health records this rise, and there are official statistics indicating a high incidence of cancer in Iraq, but linking it directly with radiation requires scientific evidence and long-term studies, but it is certain that radiation is one of the causes of cancer in the world as it is. a favour.

And on whether the American forces used this ammunition in the city of Fallujah in western Iraq after 2003, Al-Husseini replied, "We currently have one site in Fallujah, and it is an indication we have and it will be dealt with, but excessively, like the battlefield in Basra. No, in Fallujah it is much less." ".

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced, on March 24, that the US forces used no less than 300 tons of depleted uranium during the invasion of Iraq.

It confirmed that Washington used such ammunition at the time on a large scale in directing strikes against targets in the Iraqi cities of Amarah, Baghdad, Basra, Karbala, and Fallujah.
