With the onset of the hot month of July in Iraq, fires broke out again in fields and agricultural lands. Yesterday, Monday, a large fire broke out in agricultural lands in the city of Amarah, the center of Maysan Governorate, in the south of the country.
Local sources from the city of Amarah and its affiliate (Al-Mada) stated that “a large fire broke out in an agricultural land estimated at five dunums, and it was severely damaged.” She added, “Civil defense teams brought the fire under control, about three hours after it broke out.”
This was preceded by a fire in a farm in the Abu Ghraib area in the capital, Baghdad, and another in Al-Qasim district in Babil Governorate, in the center of the country, and it affected areas planted with trees, especially palm trees, without recording any losses or injuries in life.
And in Al-Muthanna Governorate, in southern Iraq, a fire broke out in a palm grove in the Musayfiyah neighborhood, while another broke out in the Najaf governorate in the south, yesterday, in a food store in Al-Haydaria district, in the city center, and it was brought under control.
In this context, Alaa al-Salami from the Civil Defense Directorate in Baghdad said, “The air temperature helps in the outbreak of fires, and therefore it is not necessary that an electrical fault or a storage error be one of the reasons for this,” adding that “the temperatures in July exceed 48 degrees Celsius.” This means that we are facing large areas and different sectors exposed to fires.
Al-Salami added, “The civil defense directorates began preparing for this wave of fires about two months ago, and it is expected that any fire that occurs will be brought under control.” He pointed out that "the fires that broke out in the past two days were in the central and southern regions of the country, and they are related to weather conditions and are not arson."
