    Alsumaria News - Economy

With the conclusion of the meetings of the Syrian-Iraqi Joint Committee in its 12th session in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, a few days ago, a discussion is being held about the extent of the “weakness of Iraqi-Syrian trade,” and the extent of its impact and decline, unlike other neighboring countries of Iraq, especially since Iraq and Syria are historical trading partners. .

While the Iraqi Minister of Trade and his Syrian counterpart stressed, during their meeting a few days ago in Baghdad, “the necessity of increasing trade exchange between the two countries,” the data indicate otherwise, the first of which is the presence of information about the deterioration of trade between the two countries across the land borders and its decline after the American military strikes until the border between The two countries are not safe for trade.

Al-Sumaria News tried to reach historical or current data for Iraqi and Syrian trade exchange, but the two parties do not have recent data in this regard.

Al-Sumaria News found data indicating a decline in trade exchange between Iraq and Syria from $656 million in 2003 to $76 million in 2015, which means it decreased by 90%.

In greater detail, during the past 12 years, Syria’s exports to Iraq decreased at an annual rate of 13.4%, from $393 million in 2003 to $69.6 million in 2015.

As for Iraq’s exports to Syria during the 12 years, they decreased at an annual rate of 26.2%. %, from $263 million in 2003 to $6.85 million in 2015.

In the same context, Syrian media and reports revealed the existence of “intentional Iraqi behavior” to restrict Syrian goods.

A report published by Al-Souriya newspaper indicated that the statements of the trade ministers of both parties were dominated by diplomatic courtesies divorced from reality, indicating that a month ago the Iraqi side decided to stop importing and trading a number of Syrian products, most notably tomatoes, in a measure that caused a shock to exporters of Syrian products who... They usually bet on the Iraqi market.

The report says that the expenses and fees imposed by the Iraqi authorities on Syrian goods trucks on the border, which are not equal to the fees on Iraq’s imports from other countries, in addition to forcing Syrian trucks to carry out “transportation” of their goods, to be loaded onto Iraqi trucks, has led to an increase in the cost of The Syrian product, in a way that made it unable to compete against its Iranian or Turkish counterpart, a dilemma that has been more than four years old.

The report touched on a statement by the head of the Aleppo Chamber of Industry, Fares Al-Shehabi, who criticized Assad’s allies in general, saying: “Until this moment, exporting a piece of children’s clothing to the markets of countries allied with Syria is much more difficult than exporting it to Mars.”

The report shows that Iraq was one of Syria's most prominent trading partners before 2011. However, after the state of security and political turmoil subsided in the two countries since 2018, economic cooperation remained below the expected level, and many restrictions were imposed, on the Iraqi side in particular.

The report indicates that one of the explanations for this is that the Iraqi side intends to obstruct Syrian exports to its territory, in order to bargain with the Syrian regime to change its policies regarding some controversial issues, the most prominent of which is security cooperation to control the porous borders and curb drug smuggling, in addition to the water issue.

In addition, the report believes that internal actors in Iraq intend to influence the state’s decision to restrict Syrian goods to prevent competition with Turkish and Iranian goods, as evidenced by statements by the head of the Federation of International Goods Shipping Companies in Syria, who said that day that there are influential Iraqi non-governmental bodies that obstructed Implementing an official decision allowing the entry of Syrian trucks into Iraqi territory, explaining that there are parties inside Iraq that do not want to allow the Syrian product to arrive at a reasonable cost, so that it does not become a competitor to Turkish and other products. And “others” means Iranian. This is confirmed by the statement of one of the representatives of Syrian exporters, about two months ago, when he confirmed that Iranian citrus fruits had displaced their Syrian counterparts from the Iraqi market.
