The Prime Minister's Advisor for Transport Affairs, Nasser Al-Asadi, revealed the latest developments regarding lifting the European ban on Iraqi flights, stating that "the continuation of the ban affects Iraq's reputation as a stable and safe country."
Nasser Al-Asadi says, “Iraq has taken the measures requested by the European Union, and is working on them,” noting that “the ban file will be closed soon.”
He added, “The continuation of the ban affects Iraq’s reputation as a stable and safe country,” noting that “aviation is a major economic outlet for the Iraqi state and the aviation sector is one of the most important sectors of high economic income in the world, and reactivating this sector after ten years of neglect has become a serious move to end the ban.”
On June 23, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani stressed, during a meeting of the committee tasked with ending the European ban file, the “necessity of fulfilling the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) as soon as possible, keeping pace with global developments in the field of air transport for passengers and goods, and working according to specific timetables to determine and achieve targets.”
For his part, economic affairs expert Alaa Al-Fahd explains that “lifting the European ban on Iraqi flights will have a positive impact on the Iraqi economy,” noting that “it will attract more foreign tourists to Iraq, which will increase revenues from tourism and contribute to stimulating the local economy.”
He added, “Facilitating air traffic means facilitating air transport of goods, which contributes to enhancing trade exchange between Iraq and European countries.”
He added, "Lifting the ban enhances confidence in the Iraqi aviation infrastructure, which may attract more foreign investment to the country."
Al-Fahd explains that “the increase in air traffic and trade will lead to the creation of new job opportunities in the aviation, tourism and trade sectors.”
He added, "Lifting the embargo strengthens diplomatic relations between Iraq and European countries, which could translate into broader economic cooperation in the future."
On July 3, the Iraqi Parliament’s Transport and Communications Committee accused the Iraqi Aviation Authority of “failure,” saying that it had “not succeeded in lifting the ban imposed on Iraqi Airways for years.”
According to a statement by the Iraqi government, “lifting the ban on Iraqi Airways is one of the files that receives great attention from the government, and it is a file that cannot be tolerated, and legal measures will be taken against those who fail to meet the requirements and follow up on this file.”
Nine years ago, Iraqi Airways was banned from flying in Europe in 2015 due to its failure to meet the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization.
Since then, Iraq has been seeking to achieve the conditions that would allow the cancellation of the international resolution, which had major negative economic effects on the country.
But in mid-2022, the European Aviation Safety Agency reaffirmed the ban on Iraqi Airways in its airspace, stressing that “it will continue until the requirements for safe operation are met by complying with the requirements of the Third Country Operator Certificate (TCO).”
