Preparatory meetings for the Baghdad Conference on Combating Drugs begin

Yesterday, Saturday, the preparatory meetings for the second Baghdad International Conference on Combating Drugs began. The advisor to the Minister of Interior, Lieutenant General Ziad Taha Ali, told "WAA": "The Ministry of Interior took the initiative to invite regional and neighboring countries regarding combating drugs," noting that "last year, the first conference was held at the level of the heads of the security agencies specialized in drugs."
He added, "The level of attendance of the agencies has now been raised to the ministerial level for the same countries that participated in the seventh conference," indicating that "a final statement will be issued tomorrow, Monday, by the ministers participating in the conference."
He stressed that this "conference is important and seeks to reduce drug smuggling and increase security coordination and intelligence cooperation in relation to combating drugs."
For his part, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Interior, Brigadier General Muqdad Miri, confirmed to "WAA" that "the aim of this international conference is to unify efforts by gathering these countries for the purpose of preparing for the conference," noting that "the aim of this conference is to combat drug crime as it is an international crime that crosses borders and no country can combat this crime alone."
In turn, the Director of the Relations and Media Directorate at the Ministry of Interior, Major General Khaled Al-Muhanna, said: “The Ministry of Interior has succeeded in establishing a system of international and regional cooperation to confront the threat of drugs through the first conference held last year,” noting that “it is hoped that this second conference will provide more reinforcement and joint cooperation and establish a permanent headquarters in Iraq, given that drugs today pose a threat to global societies, and there is a nature to the crime of drugs that it is a cross-border crime, and there are local and international groups through cooperation that have resulted in the efforts of the countries of the region to reduce this threat and dismantle many international networks.”
