Transportation: increasing the depth of ports and raising the submersibles

The Ministry of Transport has launched a strategy to increase the depths of the facades of the sea docks of ports and navigation channels to receive giant ships and vessels, while activating the operations of lifting sunken objects to prevent obstructing navigation and maritime movement in them.
The Director of the Ministry's Media Office, Maitham Al-Safi, told Al-Sabah that his ministry has prepared an integrated plan to begin cleaning the waters of the Shatt al-Arab and the marine navigation channels, especially the Khor Abdullah Canal, from sunken boats and marine waste, and removing them from all marine channels and dock facades, as they impede maritime navigation, especially since Iraqi ports are witnessing a great turnout from various shipping companies with giant and large-sized ships. He explained that Iraqi territorial waters and navigation channels are witnessing continuous sedimentation, which requires permanent excavation work to ensure the safe passage of commercial ships and the continuous preservation and maintenance of the depths, in order for ships to pass safely and receive larger types. Al-Safi stated that the production capacity of Umm Qasr ports is constantly increasing, as the loading, unloading and handling of containers is carried out smoothly as a result of the opening of a number of development projects in the two ports, which has contributed to shortening the time and effort in these operations, in addition to adopting the latest methods in the unloading operations of large arriving ships using modern equipment, which ensures the ability to deal with large and small ships with various loads.
