[rtl]Baghdad / NINA / The United Nations in Iraq, in partnership with the Ministry of Water Resources, launched today a major campaign to address the country's severe water crisis. The
year-long awareness campaign, titled "Water is Life - Every Drop Counts", aims to raise awareness among Iraqi citizens about the critical situation of their water resources and enhance their sense of responsibility to alleviate this crisis.
"Our Ministry is committed to updating water management strategies and introducing modern irrigation techniques in irrigation projects, as these efforts are essential to prevent waste and depletion of our water resources and ensure that every drop of water is used efficiently and correctly," said Minister of Water Resources Aoun
Diab Abdullah. "Cooperation with the United Nations and international organizations has been essential in these developments, and we are grateful for their support in raising awareness and promoting sustainable practices," he added.
In turn, the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq, Ghulam Mohammad Ishaqzai, pointed to the urgent situation and the collective effort required to address it.
“We are currently facing a major crisis. In recent years, river levels have fallen and fields have dried up more than ever before. We can meet this challenge through collective efforts, joint cooperation and taking decisive steps, such as developing water systems, protecting rivers from pollution and investing in innovative water management practices,” said Ishaq. “Water is Life” campaign will be organized in four phases over the next year. The first phase will focus on raising awareness about the water crisis and the effects of climate change. The second phase will introduce the key players involved in water resource management in Iraq, and promote a sense of responsibility and cooperation.
The third phase will showcase current projects and efforts by the Iraqi government and UN agencies, highlighting successes and ongoing initiatives. The final phase will look to the future, identifying plans and strategies to continue addressing the water crisis and highlighting Iraq’s engagement in international forums and efforts to secure support and funding for water projects.
The “Water is Life” campaign represents a unified effort by UN agencies and the Iraqi government to address one of the most pressing issues facing the country.
