Shafaq News/ A member of the Iraqi Parliament stated that political differences between the members of the Council led to the delay of today's session, Wednesday, which was dedicated to reading a number of important laws.
MP Luqman Al-Rashidi explained to Shafaq News Agency that the disagreements focused on amending the Personal Status Law and amending the General Amnesty Law, noting that the Personal Status Law contains many points of contention between political blocs, sects and nationalities.
Al-Rashidi added that the session will not be held until the Personal Status Law is removed from the agenda, noting that the law is still included in today's session's agenda and has not been removed yet.
For his part, MP Nour Nafeh announced that he had collected more than 25 signatures from members of the House of Representatives to remove the paragraph on amending the Personal Status Law from the House’s agenda.
Nafeh explained to Shafak News Agency that the main objection revolves around the second article of the law, which relates to inheritance and marriage contracts outside the court according to sects and doctrines.
Nafeh added that he will shortly submit a request to the Speaker of the Council to remove the law from today's session's agenda.
The House of Representatives announced the agenda for today's session, Wednesday, which includes the first reading of the proposed amendment to Personal Status Law No. 188 of 1959.
The Iraqi Communist Party warned against voting on the draft amendment to the Personal Status Law in today's session, considering it to be a consecration of sectarianism and denominationalism.
Earlier, member of the parliamentary legal committee, Mohammed Al-Khafaji, expressed his dissatisfaction with the “opposition” facing the amendment of the Personal Status Law, especially Article 57 related to child custody, and stressed that the amendment seeks to achieve justice and protect the family from disintegration amid the increase in divorce cases.
In addition, the Yazidi parliamentary bloc in the Iraqi Council of Representatives announced its boycott of the council session scheduled for today, Wednesday, due to its inclusion of the general amnesty bill.
