Economic researcher Basem Antoine revealed several loopholes in the agricultural sector, while calling on the government to limit crop imports and achieve food security for all Iraqi residents.
Antoine explained, “Iraq lives in chaos, and despite the fact that there are plans and a positive approach in the agricultural sector, which includes the largest number of workers and provides production and food security, the abundance of water and mechanization play a role in re-growing the agricultural sector in the country.”
Antoine added, "We call on the government and the concerned authorities, including the Ministry of Agriculture, to show importance to the agricultural sector, as it is of great importance to the lives of citizens by creating job opportunities and limiting the import of agricultural products." He pointed out that "with this matter, we will achieve food security for all the people of Iraq."
“There is a major mistake that the country is going through in light of the import of agricultural products and crops, and it must be addressed by supporting the agricultural sector, improving and reclaiming agricultural lands,” he continued, noting that “modern irrigation methods must also be used, in addition to producing fertilizers and their chemical and organic derivatives, in addition to resettling the Iraqi farmer, as the migration of the farmer from the countryside to the city has created many problems, including competition with the city dweller, and at the same time created a large gap and neglect of agricultural projects in the districts and sub-districts, as the level of the poor classes that used to work in agriculture has declined and made them isolated from society.”
Since the last century, Iraq has been suffering from increasing levels of drought and rising temperatures, in addition to the decline in water bodies, decreasing rainfall, and water scarcity in general. This was accompanied by the mismanagement of the water crisis by successive governments, and the failure to take measures to confront the establishment of dams by upstream countries, such as Turkey and Iran, which clearly affected the water storage, and then the agricultural plan, which fundamentally depends on water abundance.
The Department of Migration and Displacement in Basra Governorate recorded the displacement of 950 families from rural areas to the city center or to other governorates during the year 2023.
