Shafaq News/ Dozens of gas sales agency owners in Kirkuk province demonstrated on Sunday, protesting the imposition of a new tax on them and determining their routes using a GPS chip, demanding the cancellation of these restrictions, while announcing their strike due to the new procedures imposed by the gas filling company.
One of the demonstrators, Abbas Khalil, told Shafaq News Agency: "Dozens of owners of mobile gas sales agencies organized a demonstration in front of the gas filling company affiliated with the Iraqi Ministry of Oil, which is designated for cooking gas. The company informed us that it will impose a tax of one thousand dinars on every gas cylinder we sell."
Khalil added, "The second measure is imposing a GPS chip on gas movement, as the company has determined our work paths within Kirkuk Governorate only, and we cannot move outside it. We are not sure if these measures are considered sanctions or not. The tax, the GPS chip, and MasterCard in buying and selling are all restrictions that hinder our work."
He stressed that "all street vendors declared a strike today due to the restrictions imposed by the gas filling company in Kirkuk Governorate only."
Another protester, Abdul Rahman Mahmoud, told Shafaq News Agency, "The strike has gone into effect without further notice," indicating that "the gas filling company is asking us to use a MasterCard in selling, but the majority of Kirkuk residents do not have a MasterCard, so how can a poor person obtain a MasterCard to buy a cylinder for seven thousand dinars?"
In addition, Mahmoud says, “The company imposed a tax of 1,000 dinars on the cylinder, while we used to buy the cylinder for 4,000 to 5,000 dinars and sell it for 7,000 dinars. Today, the company sells it to us for 6,000 dinars, so we will have to sell it to the citizen for 10,000 dinars, which is a very high price, and no one will buy gas at this price if we increase the prices.”
Mahmoud called for the cancellation of “new procedures related to tax, selling with MasterCard, and determining routes with GPS chips.”
For his part, a source in the Kirkuk Gas Filling Company told Shafak News Agency, "These procedures are government instructions issued by the Federal Ministry of Oil through the Gas Company," explaining, "We implement the instructions according to what we receive from the Ministry of Oil."
He added, "If instructions are issued not to implement, we will stop, but these procedures aim to transform the buying and selling processes electronically and determine the paths of mobile vendors."
