Economic expert Hatem Al-Muhammadi confirmed that the Faw Port represents a vital strategic opportunity for Iraq, calling for accelerating construction work to complete it as soon as possible.
Al-Muhammadi said, “The port will enhance Iraq’s position as a major commercial center in the region, which will contribute to improving trade movement and reducing logistical costs,” adding that “the speed of completing the project will have significant positive effects on the local economy by creating new job opportunities and attracting investments.”
He added, "The port will accelerate trade movement by providing a direct sea outlet for Iraq, which reduces dependence on other ports and lowers shipping costs," noting that "the port is expected to create many job opportunities in the region, in addition to enhancing the surrounding economic activities such as industries and logistics services."
He added, "The port will attract foreign and local investments, which will enhance economic growth and stimulate development in Iraq."
According to the economic expert, “the development of the port will include updating and expanding the infrastructure, such as roads and logistical facilities, which will benefit the national economy in general.”
For its part, the Ministry of Transport announced the completion of the first section of the development road, which is the road linking the entrance to the Faw Port and the submerged tunnel, which is 63 km long.
The Director General of Iraqi Ports, Farhan Al-Fartousi, said in a statement by the Ministry’s media office, “The first section of the road linking the Grand Faw Port and the submerged tunnel has been completed, as the road has become passable after the completion of the first layer of asphalt, with a length of 51 km.”
He added, "This road represents the first section of the development road, which passes through the submerged tunnel and then passes through two bridges, the first of which has exceeded 96% completion, and the second has exceeded 77%."
He added, "The road linking the port and the submerged tunnel represents the second project of the five projects of the Grand Faw Port, which is scheduled to be completed in the middle of next year, 2025."
Al-Fartousi explained that, “Regarding the immersed tunnel project, the inspection and analysis operations of the concrete blocks, as well as the closing and preparation operations for the purpose of inspection, which will be carried out next September, have begun. He added that the flotation operations of the concrete blocks will begin at the end of this year.”
He pointed out that "work in the navigation canal is witnessing advanced rates of completion, after the project's special dredger began work at the beginning of June, and is still continuing its work."
Regarding the container yard, the Director General revealed “the escalation of work and completion rates therein,” stressing that “the closure of the opening in the rock dam of this canal will soon be announced, and therefore the completion of the backfilling operations.”
Al-Fartousi explained that “the last quarter of next year 2025 will witness the gradual announcement of the completion of work on the four projects, as we will announce the completion of the fifth project (the five sidewalks) completely this year 2024.”
