    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Today, Thursday (August 29, 2024), the leader of the Coordination Framework, Ali Al-Fatlawi, identified three dangerous indicators of the Turkish incursion into the Kurdistan Region.
Al-Fatlawi said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", "Ankara's position comes against Iraq's efforts to build good neighborly relations and strengthen the principle of common interests through the policy of penetrating deep inside, especially in recent weeks, which witnessed an unprecedented escalation in the bombing, reaching the point of building military bases near Amadiyah and continuing military movement in different directions."
He added, "Establishing checkpoints and searching civilian homes deep inside Iraq is a violation of Iraqi sovereignty, and the government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must take a firm stance in stating the seriousness of what is happening and the importance of not violating sovereignty because it will lead to serious consequences, stressing that the presence of Turkish bases inside is unacceptable."
He pointed out that "Iraq is clear in its principle of not having activities that threaten the security of its neighbors, but Ankara must realize the seriousness of what it is doing in the depths, and the invasion and militarization will not solve the problems," stressing that "building more camps and military bases raises many question marks, and the state must take a position."
The Turkish presidency denied, on Thursday (August 22, 2024), news of Turkey’s agreement with Iraq to end its military presence on Iraqi territory.
The Anti-Disinformation Center of the Turkish Presidency's Communications Department confirmed that "there is no truth to the allegations that talk about an agreement between Baghdad and Ankara to end the Turkish military presence on Iraqi territory."
Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said in a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, in Ankara last Thursday, "We will reach certain understandings with the Turkish side regarding the Bashiqa camp," north of the city of Mosul, where Turkish forces have been present for years despite Baghdad's objection to that.
For his part, the Turkish Foreign Minister announced "the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Turkey and Iraq regarding military and security cooperation and combating terrorism."
Hussein described the MoU (on military and security cooperation and counter-terrorism) as the “first of its kind” in the history of the two countries.
Turkish forces have been present in northern Iraq in the Bashiqa area north of Mosul since 2015. Turkey has said that these forces are there to train Kurdish Peshmerga forces, while Iraq considered this a blatant attack on its sovereignty.
Some sources indicate the presence of 120-150 Turkish soldiers in the Iraqi camp.
