The Jordanian position on the ongoing war in Gaza and Lebanon, and the participation of Jordanian forces in repelling and shooting down missiles and drones heading to the entity, whether from Iran, Yemen or Iraq, has reopened the door to thinking, discussion and objection inside Iraq to the privileges granted to Jordan, and the form of relations with it, especially with the clear Iraqi position that does not adhere to neutrality but rather clearly sides with Palestine and Lebanon against the entity.

The hashtag "Stop Iraq's aid to Jordan" topped the X platform, where Iraqi tweeters demanded that the parliament stop the facilities and privileges that Iraq grants to Jordan, in light of its position towards the Israeli aggression on Palestine and Lebanon.

This move coincided with a request submitted by a number of members of the Iraqi parliament to the parliament presidency to legislate a law to "cancel the privileges granted by Iraq to Jordan in economic relations," while the request submitted by MP Hadi Al-Salam justified this move, saying that "due to the participation of Jordanian aircraft in bombing Iraqi sites of the Popular Mobilization Forces" in a round of attacks launched by American aircraft in February 2024.

From here, "Al-Sumaria News" reviews the nature of the facilities and privileges that Jordan obtains from Iraq, where the most important of the privileges is the oil exported to Jordan by Iraq, which ranges between 10 and 15 thousand barrels per day at a discount of $16 per barrel from the price of Brent, and this costs Iraq about $5 million per month.

But from an economic perspective, the oil exported to Jordan is Kirkuk oil, which is of lower quality than Brent crude and even lower quality than Basra crude, which makes its price naturally lower than Brent crude. If it is not exported to Jordan, it cannot be sold at the price of Brent crude, because Iraq's crude is basically lower than Brent crude, and Iraq sells Basra oil to all parts of the world at a price lower than Brent crude by about $3.

The discount also includes Jordan's responsibility for transporting the crude, as Iraq does not transport Kirkuk oil but rather deposits it in the Kirkuk warehouse, and Jordanian and Iraqi tankers come and transport it, and the transportation cost is at Jordan's expense, unlike what Iraq does in transporting its oil through ports, where it rents ships and transports it to territorial waters to be loaded later by sea tankers.

As for commercially, Iraq imports about a billion dollars from Jordan annually, which makes it the leading country importing from Jordan. Iraq has also granted Jordan a customs exemption for more than 350 goods since 2017.
