She confirmed that the afforestation campaign will increase the vegetation cover and reduce pollution...
    Al-Zawraa/ Hussein Faleh:
The Ministry of Agriculture announced its success in planting more than 6 million and 400 thousand seedlings within the “Green Iraq... More Beautiful Iraq” initiative in all governorates. While it confirmed that the major afforestation campaign will increase the vegetation cover and reduce pollution, it indicated that the government is paying unprecedented attention to the agricultural sector.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture, Mohammed Al-Khazai, said in an interview with Al-Zawraa: The government has given unprecedented attention to the agricultural sector and the green reality in Iraq, indicating that we are living in very harsh climate changes represented by high temperatures and drought that has hit many areas of Iraq, as well as chronic problems related to Iraq’s water shares with neighboring countries, specifically in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and lack of rain, in addition to the dredging that was exploited for a period of time by weak souls who committed a major crime against orchards and entire palm forests that were cut off and replaced with irregular residential complexes. All of these things combined to lead to the deterioration of the agricultural sector and we are now facing the challenges of desertification that has even hit urban centers known for their weather, specifically the capital, Baghdad, the holy Karbala and the holy Najaf.
He added that the government has given this aspect unprecedented importance, which was launched at the climate conference held in Basra in March 2023 and the Prime Minister's initiative to plant 5 million seedlings, and the initiative was called Green Iraq and a More Beautiful Iraq, noting that the Ministry of Agriculture formed a committee headed by the Minister and included many of the concerned ministries, where this initiative was implemented in record time, and instead of the number of seedlings being 5 million, we were able to exceed this number and achieved more than the barrier of 6 million and 400 thousand seedlings in various governorates of Iraq. He continued that this initiative was not enough, as the Prime Minister launched his initiative on September 15 for Baghdad, and on October 1 the initiative included all governorates of Iraq, indicating that this interest reflects the extent of the care that the government has given to the agricultural sector despite the size of the challenges in the sector, and also reflects the size of the challenge and danger that we have reached.
He continued by saying: “Today, we notice almost continuous and successive dust storms in various Iraqi governorates. We had to stop, stressing that these steps are the beginning of a real shift in interest in trees to overcome this difficult stage represented by the abundance of pollution in the atmosphere.
Last Tuesday, a tree planting campaign was launched in Baghdad and the governorates to reduce desertification and expand green spaces.
The Baghdad Municipality and its affiliated municipalities began implementing the campaign, which was called (Baghdad Plants) to plant permanent and seasonal trees.” In this regard, the Director of the Agriculture Department in the Mansour Municipality, Jamal Mahdi Saleh, said that “under direct instructions from Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, the tree planting campaign was launched in all regions,” noting that “the Mansour Municipality Directorate began on Al-Rawad Street by planting trees along the road.”
He added that “the Agriculture Department in the Mansour Municipality planted more than (20) thousand trees in all regions within the Mansour Municipality sector during the fall of this year.”
In turn, Hoda Kamel, Media Director of Al Mansour Municipality, confirmed that “the campaign that was launched today included all municipal departments, including Al Mansour Municipality,” noting that “1,000 trees were planted within Al Mansour Municipality.”
She stressed that “the campaign also focused on media awareness of the importance of afforestation and expanding green spaces, whether in schools, citizens or shops, to support afforestation.”[/size]
