Insurance companies in America sue Saudi Arabia over the September 11 attacks

    Date of release: 2017/3/24

Saudi Arabia is facing a new lawsuit demanding compensation of six billion dollars set up by dozens of insurance companies seeking to hold the Kingdom responsible for damage to work and property because of the attacks of September 11, 2001.
The suit, filed late Thursday before the US District Court in Manhattan, is the latest attempt to make Saudi Arabia responsible for the attacks.
About 3,000 people died in attacks on four hijacked passenger planes that hit the World Trade Center in New York, the third hit the Pentagon near Washington, and the fourth landed in a field in Pennsylvania.
Insurance companies accuse Saudi Arabia and a state charity of providing funding and other material support, enabling al Qaeda and its leader Osama bin Laden to carry out the attacks.
The Saudi government has repeatedly denied involvement in the attacks.
Lawyers for the government and the charity, the supreme body to raise funds for Muslims in Bosnia and Herzegovina, on Friday declined to comment, while other lawyers were not immediately available for comment.
Saudi Arabia has long been granted immunity from a wide range of lawsuits related to the September 11 attacks in the United States.
That changed last September when the US Congress overturned the veto used by former President Barack Obama and adopted the Justice Act against the sponsors of terrorism, allowing for such cases to proceed.
Insurance companies said they planned to show that the September 11 attacks were "an act of international terrorism."
At least seven other lawsuits were also filed in the Manhattan Court on behalf of individuals.
