    [ltr]The European Union refugee agency said the number of people seeking international protection in Europe in 2017 fell by almost half over the previous year and that most applicants were Syrians.[/ltr]
    [ltr]The European Union said on Thursday that 706,913 people had applied for asylum in the 28 EU countries plus Norway and Switzerland in 2017, 43 percent less than the previous year.[/ltr]
    [ltr]This is the second year in a row that figures have fallen, after more than 1 million people, mostly Syrian refugees, entered Europe in 2015.[/ltr]
    [ltr]More than 98,000 Syrian refugees have applied for asylum twice, and more than 40,000 refugees from Iraq, Afghanistan and Nigeria have applied for asylum.[/ltr]
    [ltr]According to the Office, about 40 per cent of all asylum applications in 2017 were successful[/ltr]
