Japan offers new funding to stabilize Iraq
The United Nations has announced new funding from the Government of Japan to stabilize communities affected by the conflict in Iraq and to support reintegration among displaced people.
"Thanks to the generous support of the Government of Japan and the comprehensive response of the International Organization for Migration in Iraq to the needs of those affected by conflict in the areas of return,
The $ 3.64 million subsidy benefits more than 160,000 people through shelter reform, strengthening health services, improving medical facilities and supporting social cohesion efforts in the most vulnerable returnee communities.
On Japan's assistance, Japan's ambassador to Iraq, Fumio Iwai, said: "This is the fourth year in a row that Japan has provided aid to displaced Iraqis and Syrian refugees who have been hardest hit by its additional budget. This financial support shows Japan's strong and sincere commitment to address Basic needs in the camps and areas of return in Iraq ".
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) field assessment in Tal Afar in December 2017, approximately 40 per cent of houses were completely destroyed or partially damaged. In addition to repairing damaged homes for dozens of the most affected families, IOM will rehabilitate a park in the center of Tall Afar with landscapes Trees and child-friendly area to play.
"Securing shelter and access to basic services is essential for returnees to rebuild their lives and find a lasting solution to their displacement," said Gerard White, head of the International Organization for Migration's mission in Iraq.
"We are grateful for Japan's continued support for IOM in Iraq at this critical time. Large-scale military operations have ceased, and now our main focus is in cooperation with the Government of Iraq on capacity-building and damage repair caused by three years of conflict," he said.
IOM will establish and operate two community centers in Tal Afar and Mosul to enhance mediation and conflict resolution skills, women's leadership and youth empowerment, as well as psychosocial support focusing on stress management, resilience and self-confidence.
On the other hand, IOM will also improve and revitalize the medical centers, including the General Hospital in Tal Afar and the Zeitoun Primary Health Care Center in Erbil, to improve the access of returnees and displaced persons to quality health care services.
The funds will also improve the ophthalmology unit in Mosul and thousands of people will be screened and about 1,500 people will be given glasses through joint public-private work with Japanese company Fuji Megan.
