On Wednesday, March 23, 2022, the Ministry of Agriculture identified two reasons behind the inability to provide oil and sugar locally.

The Ministry says that if yellow corn is allowed to be planted, we will be able to save oil
The ministry's spokesman, Hamid Nayef, told the official agency, "Ultra Iraq" followed him, "The ministry will prepare the agricultural plan during the fifth month, which is the Shaleb plan, as the summer plan is prepared and submitted to the Ministry of Water Resources through a joint committee, which decides the areas covered by agriculture." .
Al-Nayef expressed his hope that "there will be a quota for rice, because the Shalaby governorates grow rice, and we cannot deprive them during the current season, but it may decrease or increase, according to the existing water data."
He added, "It is too early to exclude the cultivation of strawberry from the summer plan, as it needs large amounts of water to grow it, throughout the period of cultivation while it is submerged in water because its soil is special."
He pointed out that "if yellow corn was allowed to be planted, we would have been able to provide oil, and if there was cultivation of sugar cane that was present in Maysan Governorate, we would have been able to provide sugar, as our country is still behind in agriculture, due to the lack of support for this important sector," stressing that "" The ministry did not receive financial support to distribute the dues to farmers and poultry producers.
He explained, "If the agricultural plan was complete for this year, we would have been self-sufficient in the wheat crop, as the water problem is still stuck with the Turkish side, and there is no mechanism until we get our water in any way whatsoever, although we have all the sources of power that we impose on them, until we get on our water dues,” stressing that “our negotiations are still stumbling.”
On Tuesday, March 22, 2022, the Ministry of Agriculture announced that the wheat stock is not sufficient for more than three months [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
The Minister of Agriculture, Muhammad Mahdi Al-Khafaji, said, "The ministry was optimistic about the Prime Minister's support for the agricultural sector, stopping the random import process, and adhering to the agricultural calendar."
He pointed out that "the wheat harvest for this season, we expect to reach 3 million tons, a decrease of 500,000 tons from last year," noting that "there is current storage at the Ministry of Commerce that does not exceed three months."
He stressed that there is "a plan to expand in the next agricultural season in order to reach self-sufficiency."
