Shafaq News/ Although more than 19 years have passed since the fall of the former regime in Iraq, the participation of women in successive governments was not at the desired level, as this female representation in ministries did not appear as expected.
Nisreen Berwari was the first woman to hold the portfolio of the Ministry of Public Works after 2003 in the transitional government of former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, whose government included six female ministers, a participation that no cabinet has reached until today.
While five women held ministerial positions in the government of Ibrahim al-Jaafari, the proportions then decreased in the governments that followed al-Jaafari and preceded the current government to three female ministers in the first government of Nuri al-Maliki and two in the second.
In the government of Haider al-Abadi, a woman assumed the position of minister of state, and it was later abolished, until a ministerial portfolio was given to another candidate in 2016.
As for the government of Adel Abdul-Mahdi, it did not include a female minister at first, but in the last days of her life a woman won the confidence of Parliament to take over the Ministry of Education.
One female minister also assumed the Ministry of Immigration and Displaced in the government of Mustafa Al-Kadhimi. As for the current government, which Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani was assigned to form, it includes three female ministers of Finance, Communications, and Migration and Displaced.

In the current government headed by Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani, women's representation in his government's ministries was somewhat satisfactory, as Evan Yacoub Jabro, the youngest among the ministers, assumed the Ministry of Migration and Displacement for the second time in a row.

She held several positions, including the former Minister of Immigration, a member of the Reconstruction and Services Committee in the Council of Ministers, a member of the Iraqi-Jordanian-Egyptian Tripartite Coordination Council, a member of the Women’s Economic Empowerment Committee in the Council of Ministers, chairwoman of the Higher Committee for Relief and Support for Displaced Persons affiliated to the Ministry of Migration and the Displaced, and chairwoman of the Supreme National Committee to follow up the conditions of Iraqis abroad.

The Director General of the Women's Social Protection Department at the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, Atour Al-Mousawi, explained to Shafaq News agency, "Women are able to always change reality, as happened with me during my current position, where I assumed the position without financial allocations in the department, which was basically a disability." In front of me completing my work, especially since the department is concerned with supporting women who have lost a breadwinner.”
She added, "There are challenges represented in the societal culture that imposes that women are unable to assume or succeed in important positions in the government, and to perform the tasks assigned to them, but the reality confirms the opposite. As for the rest of the challenges, there is a culture of generalization as well, as the failure of one woman is sufficient to generalize it to the rest of the women." He continued by saying, "The current government included many female ministerial figures who actually ran some key ministries, so I am with the hypothesis that the current stage establishes for future stages for women to assume a presidential position, and this is what the current session will translate in light of a number of women assuming ministerial positions that are not easy." With the continuation of crises and challenges, accepting women ministers is a challenge that may differ from the perceptions and impressions of some who question women in terms of performance and the ability to make decisions.”
