Iraqi experts in the oil sector considered, on Monday, that the contract signed with the French company “Total” is difficult to predict the extent of its service to the country.
Oil economist Nabil Al-Marsoumi said, "The contract signed with (Total) has not been published so that we know its details and assess whether it achieves the interest of citizens or not, and it is no different from the contracts for the fifth licensing round that the previous government signed with 3 Emirati companies and 3 Chinese companies." without publishing details.
He added, "The Ministry of Oil signed with Total on four projects, including a marine project related to the withdrawal of five million barrels per day of sea water for the purposes of injecting oil fields, which is an important project and one of the projects that was supposed to be implemented 12 years ago by Exxon Mobil." )”.
He continued, "The other project is building solar power plants to generate electricity, which is also very important because it is a promising project for the transition from producing electricity with oil derivatives to relying on solar energy."
He pointed out that "the other project is the gas complexes in West Qurna and Artawi, which can add 600 cubic meters per day, which contributes to reducing the costs of dependence on Iranian gas."
He explained, "The fourth project is to develop the Artawi field to produce from 90 to 210 thousand barrels per day, and this is very important because it will serve oil revenues."
For his part, oil expert Hamza Al-Jawahiri said, "The contract with (Total) company achieves a quantum leap in terms of formality, but it does not have a positive return if it is not activated."
He added, "The company may suddenly stop working without justification, or exit the project, as (Exxon Mobil) did."
The Ministry of Oil and Total signed a $27 billion contract for four oil and gas projects and renewable energy projects.
