After the Federal Court's decision to terminate Muhammad al-Halbousi's membership in the House of Representatives, political discussions and dialogues continue to choose a new Speaker of Parliament.
Today, Sunday (December 3, 2023), the leader in the coordination framework, Ali Al-Fatlawi, confirms the continuation of political dialogues to elect the Speaker of Parliament before the date of the provincial council elections, while indicating the coalition’s position on the matter.
Al-Fatlawi told "Baghdad Today", "The various political forces are communicating and dialogue in order to reach understandings and agree on the personality of the new speaker of parliament. There is a political insistence on resolving this issue before the provincial council elections," noting that "the matter depends on the results of the dialogues. " .
Al-Fatlawi pointed out that “the coordination framework does not yet support a specific person to head the House of Representatives,” stressing that it is “working to bring viewpoints closer together in order for all political forces to enter with one candidate, and to reduce the intensity of political differences and not deepen them.”
Earlier, a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Dilshad Shaaban, considered that electing a new speaker of Parliament to replace Muhammad al-Halbousi requires the agreement of the entire Sunni blocs .
Shaaban said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “the position of Speaker of Parliament goes to the Sunni component and whoever is agreed upon by the component must be voted for . ”
He added, "The desire of the constituents must be respected, and the desire of the Shiite constituents must be respected and they are given the right to choose the position of prime minister . "
He explained, "The Kurds, specifically the Democratic Party, respect the desire of the majority Sunni blocs that agree on a specific candidate for the position of Speaker of Parliament, and whoever they agree on, we will vote for . "
The House of Representatives had postponed its special session to vote on a new Speaker of Parliament to replace Al-Halbousi, until political balance was achieved.
