Slums and burning waste exacerbate Diwaniyah’s suffering: the poverty rate may reach 47%

Diwaniyah/Dia Al-Mahja
Continuous suffering is added to the problems and reality of Al-Diwaniyah Governorate, which is the spread of slum dwellers within the city center, and next to them is the burning of medical waste in places where waste and unpleasant odors accumulate, along with the high rate of poverty and unemployment, which has reached more than 47%, without government treatments.
Director of the Human Rights Commission in Diwaniyah, Muhammad Al-Badiri, said in an interview with Al-Mada: “These slums are spread across various areas of the governorate, specifically the Old Camp area, which faces the danger of burning waste and rubbish, which causes serious diseases to the slum residents, including children, women, and the elderly.”
He added, “These problems require central and local government intervention and the relevant departments to save slum dwellers.”
Important government departments are located in these areas, namely the General Directorate of Diwaniyah Education, the Specialized Center for Cardiac Surgery, and the Burns Center.
Citizen Umm Ayed, a slum resident, told Al-Mada that slum residents are calling on the local government, stakeholders, and service and health departments to save us and our children from diseases caused by waste and burning it.
A number of social media bloggers launched a campaign to save slum residents from this crisis after sending appeals to the concerned authorities.
Diwaniyah Environment Director Asaad Al-Mahanna said in an interview with Al-Mada that the environmental and health teams conducted field visits to these areas and submitted reports in official letters to the concerned authorities regarding the need to find appropriate solutions to limit the spread of epidemic diseases and unpleasant odors.
He added that the situation requires urgent intervention by the relevant government agencies within the governorate, as it threatens slum dwellers.
One of the drivers who works near these areas, Ali Al-Abdi, explained in an interview with Al-Mada that waste, burning, and other toxic emissions are taking place in these areas, and dumpers are dumping various wastes, including natural and mineral wastes, that affect people’s health.
Diwaniyah suffers from various problems in terms of the service sector in all its sectors, the failure of projects and their referral to incompetent companies that are unable to implement major projects.
Diwaniyah Statistics Director Muhammad Al-Ziyadi said in an interview with Al-Mada that “the poverty rate will reach more than 47% and the unemployment rate will reach 35% in Diwaniyah throughout the current year, according to the field survey of the governorate’s statistics department.”
He continued that these problems of poverty and unemployment require a thoughtful and strategic plan and programs to address the problems in Diwaniyah.
It is noteworthy that Diwaniyah Governorate is considered the second poorest Iraqi governorate after Muthanna Governorate, according to the statistics of the Ministry of Planning, because there are no petrodollar projects or government outlets except the agricultural sector, which suffers neglect and decline as a result of weak government support.
