Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: Minister of Communications, Hiyam Al-Yasiri, announced on Thursday that approval had been obtained to introduce a fourth mobile operator license to Iraq, while indicating that the requirements for the fifth generation license had been prepared.
Al-Yasiri stated in her speech during her participation in the meeting of the 27th session of the Council of Arab Ministers for Communications, that “Iraq today seeks to exploit its distinguished geographical location to be an important regional corridor linking the countries of the region with Europe via Turkey to the north and via Syria and Jordan to the west.”
She added: “We have initiated the necessary plans to make Iraq a corridor for international communications and transit in the region, given that Iraq is the shortest land corridor from the Arabian Gulf,” calling on “all companies and bodies wishing to establish investment contracts with Iraq to achieve these goals.”
She continued, "The Iraqi government agreed to introduce a fourth mobile operator license to Iraq, and work is underway to complete its contractual procedures with fifth generation technology."
She stressed, “We are striving to exert persistent and accelerated efforts in Iraq to move forward with comprehensive digital transformation and automation procedures,” noting that “we are in the final stages of launching the electronic signature project in Iraq.”
She stated, “We have begun implementing several expansion projects for the communications infrastructure network represented by a wide fiber-optic network extending throughout all of Iraq,” noting, “building advanced commercial data centers in addition to establishing the IXP Internet switch, and there is an intention to increase its numbers.”
She pointed to “preparing the requirements for a fifth generation license and bringing Internet service prices to the lowest possible levels,” explaining, “We have sought in the postal sector with unremitting efforts to strengthen Iraq’s role in the Arab and International Postal Union, and Iraq’s index in the union has risen by many points.”
She stressed “the necessity of expanding and developing reliance on mail in e-commerce, transporting goods and commodities, and automating the work of the savings system, in addition to preparing and reviewing legislation for the communications and information sector, most notably the Information Crimes Law, the Personal Data Protection Law, and others.”
