Completion of the 1000 Schools Project by 2024

Since assuming office, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has developed a systematic plan to complete stalled or faltering projects related to the advancement of education in the country. Several months ago, he directed the completion and implementation of the 1,000 model school building project during the current year 2024, while stressing that bridging the deficit in the number of school buildings is a goal that the government has placed at the forefront of the service necessities of its program.
Recently, the government media team announced the completion of 350 model schools out of a total of 1,000 new schools in Baghdad and the governorates. The spokesman for the government media team, Haider Majeed, said: “The number of model schools that have been completed within the Chinese agreement has reached (350) new schools,” noting that “the number of schools still under construction has reached (650) schools.” He pointed out that “these schools are among the 1,000 schools that have been started within the Chinese agreement and that will be established in various governorates,” noting that “the Ministry of Education, as part of the efforts to rehabilitate school buildings, which it began last year, has rehabilitated four thousand schools so far and equipped them with various necessary supplies.”
Majeed revealed a map of the distribution of model schools distributed among 15 governorates according to population density, and said: “The number of schools in the southern governorates is 297 schools distributed between Basra Governorate 86 schools, Dhi Qar 106 schools, Maysan 52 schools, and Muthanna 53 schools,” noting that “the number of schools in the governorates of the Middle Euphrates reached 145 schools, distributed as follows: in Najaf Ashraf 40 schools, Karbala Al-Muqaddasa 44 schools, and Diwaniyah 61 schools.”
He added that "the number of schools in the central governorates reached 293 schools, distributed in Baghdad 144 schools, Diyala 56 schools, Babylon 45 schools, and Wasit 48 schools," indicating that "the number of schools in the western and northern governorates reached 44 schools in Kirkuk, 92 schools in Nineveh, 51 schools in Anbar, and 78 schools in Salah al-Din."
The ministry’s spokesman, Karim Al-Sayed, explained that “the Ministry of Education is still making great efforts in school building projects,” stressing that “there is great progress in these projects.”
He pointed out that “1,000 new schools will enter service by the end of this year 2024, in addition to following up on the (Number One) project, as well as the Chinese schools project, in addition to the new project through the Iraq Development Fund.” Regarding the “My School is More Beautiful” project, Al-Sayed explained that “this project is one of the projects implemented by the ministry through direct implementation,” and it was implemented in 35 schools in Baghdad, while it is being implemented during the current summer vacation in 1,500 other schools in all governorates.
The government's efforts were not limited to implementing and completing new school buildings, but extended to equipping existing schools on field trips, as well as rehabilitating and renovating thousands of schools throughout the country.
The Service Effort Team announced the preparation of more than 78,000 school trips in Baghdad and the governorates. He pointed out that “the team also prepared 2,000 school boards, including 1,000 boards for Maysan Governorate and 700 boards for Dhi Qar Governorate,” indicating that “Muthanna Governorate will be equipped with 300 boards.” As for the rehabilitation of school buildings, it targets 4,000 schools throughout Iraq.
As a sample of the government’s efforts in the schools sector, the Karbala Education Directorate counted the number of school buildings in the governorate. The Director of School Buildings in the Karbala Education Directorate, Mu’ayyad Al-Asadi, said: “Karbala Governorate’s share of the model school construction project is (44) new schools,” noting that “only (8) schools have been completed and it is hoped that (10) more schools will be completed.”

Al-Asadi added that “work is underway to maintain old school buildings according to the available financial allocations,” noting that “lists have been prepared and implementation orders have been issued to maintain (28) schools at a cost of approximately one billion and 800 million dinars.”
He explained that “the holy city of Karbala includes (465) school buildings,” indicating that “the maintenance work is carried out by committees from the Education Directorate in the governorate in a direct implementation manner, and each committee includes an engineer and an accountant in addition to the principal of the school itself.”
