Member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee Ali Al-Bandawi stated today, Saturday, that Turkey relies on old agreements dating back to the era of the former regime to justify the incursion of its forces into the Kurdistan Region, denying the existence of any recent agreement between the Iraqi government and the Turkish side regarding this incursion.
Al-Bandawi said in an interview followed by /Mawazine News/, that "there is no agreement between the Iraqi government and the Turkish government that allows incursion into the region for a specific or unspecified distance." He added that "the Security and Defense Committee considers this intervention a blatant attack on the sovereignty of Iraqi territory."
Al-Bandawi pointed out that "the Turkish side relies on an agreement with the former regime dating back to 1991, which allowed them to intervene in Iraqi territory for five kilometers and for only three days."
He explained that "this agreement came as a result of the weakness of the Iraqi state during the period of the war with Iran and the war with Kuwait," stressing that "the Turkish side exploited this weak situation in Iraq to expand its influence."
Al-Bandawi concluded by calling on the central and regional governments to "intensify efforts and dialogue to end these violations."
