    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Today, Sunday (July 28, 2024), the leader of the Arab component, Hatem Al-Asi, called on the Kurdish parties to take a "good faith initiative" to end the file of detainees in Kurdistan prisons, and return to jointly administering the governorate.
Al-Asi said in an interview with Baghdad Today that "more than 4,000 detainees from Kirkuk are in the prisons of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah," indicating that "these people are being detained under the pretext that they are ISIS members, but there are innocent people among them, and if they are ISIS members, the Iraqi judiciary is the first to try them."
He added, "The Kurdish parties are required to end the file of Arab detainees in the region's prisons as a first step that expresses good faith, to return to Kirkuk and manage it jointly."
Earlier, the member of the Kirkuk Provincial Council for the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Hassan Majeed, confirmed that the main reason for the Kirkuk crisis is the lack of trust between the components, indicating that the solution begins with making concessions.
Despite the holding of the first session of the Kirkuk Provincial Council, no agreement has yet been reached on the selection of a new governor, and pledges have been made to the blocs and members of the council that any agreement will not be put on the table of the council meeting.
