    Baghdad Today - Erbil
The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs in the Kurdistan Region said today, Saturday (August 17, 2024), that the percentage of local employment in projects in the region should not be less than 75%.
The ministry explained in a statement received by "Baghdad Today", that "according to the decision of the Council of Ministers of the Kurdistan Region No. (172), for each project the percentage of local employment must not be less than 75% of the number of workers.
She added, "Under the decision, employers can only employ less than 25% of foreign workers."
On Friday (February 16, 2024), the head of the Organization for Culture and Protection of Foreign Workers, Hama Hazar, revealed statistics on the status of workers in the Kurdistan Region during the year 2023.
"There are more than 40,000 foreign workers in the region, and they, like other segments of Kurdish society, have been affected by the financial crisis, especially the delay in salaries associated with them," Hazar said during a press conference.
He added, "During 2023, 12 deaths, two cases of sexual assault, 52 cases of abuse were recorded, 32 of which were resolved, and a case of trafficking in foreign workers and smuggling them to central and southern Iraq. This problem was resolved by renewing the passports of about 500 workers from Nepal in Kurdistan."
Regarding the problems suffered by foreign workers, Hazar explained that “the failure to adopt international standards in bringing in foreign workers has greatly affected the rights of some workers,” noting that “the lack of domestic job opportunities has also affected foreign workers, as well as the increase in fees and taxes on foreign workers.”
He called on the regional government to listen to the organization's demands and reduce fees on foreign workers, similar to what is followed in the central and southern regions of Iraq.
