Minister of Transport Kazem Vajan Al-Yamami announced that Iraq has officially acceded to the Protocol to the Convention on the Safety of Life at Sea.

"In a few days, the Ministry of Transport, through its new formation and its legal department, has managed to reach out to international maritime organizations and to move the stalemate in our performance since 1980," Hammami said in a statement.

"The results of the efforts resulted in Iraq's accession to Protocol 88 of the Convention on the Safety of Life at Sea, accession to the International Convention for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea, accession to the International Convention for the Control of Marine Pollution, accession to the Maritime Search and Rescue Agreement, The Maritime Fund Convention, the Convention on Civil Liability at Sea and the Maritime Claims Convention ".

"With this accession, Iraq is very close to becoming a white maritime list and leaving the black list," he said.

He explained that "this move was represented by the registration of berths in the ports of the World Maritime Organization in preparation for the liberation of the Iraqi marine bodies from the specifications (war zones) and reduce the rates of maritime insurance imposed on ships on our ports."

The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, in its successive forms, is one of the most important international conventions and conventions relating to the safety of merchant ships.
