The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Public Municipalities will soon open two strategic water projects in Baghdad and Wasit Governorate.
The Director General of Water in the Ministry, Ammar Adel Hussein, said in a statement to "Al-Sabah": His directorate, within the framework of its plans prepared to eliminate water scarcity in the areas surrounding Baghdad and all governorates, and in implementation of the government program, is preparing soon to open two strategic water projects, the first is the Al-Zahour Water Project north of Baghdad with a production capacity of 10,000 m3/hour, which will end the problem of water scarcity in all areas and villages of the surrounding Al-Zahour District.
He added that the second project is Al-Zubaidiya Water in Wasit Governorate with a capacity of up to 1,500 m3/hour, noting that his directorate has previously opened seven major water projects since the beginning of the formation of the current government, namely: Al-Kayara in Nineveh Governorate, Al-Dujayl Water and Balad Air Base in Salah al-Din Governorate, and Al-Kut Water in Wasit Governorate, while it recently opened Al-Nahrawan Central Water, Al-Baghdadi Water in Anbar, in addition to Al-Salam and Al-Mansouriya Water in Diyala Governorate.
In the same context, Hussein revealed that work is ongoing on 20 water projects in 13 governorates: Nineveh, Kirkuk, Salah al-Din, Diyala, Anbar, and Babylon, in addition to Karbala, Najaf, Diwaniyah, Maysan, Dhi Qar, Muthanna, and Basra.
He explained that the electronic automation project that the ministry is working on, which aims to reduce water waste and transfer collection mechanisms from citizens to electronic systems, has reached 52 percent completion rates across the country, while the Kirkuk Water Directorate has achieved the highest rate of meter installation, with their number so far reaching 125,824, or 89 percent of the total work in the governorate, stressing that work is underway on the project in the remaining governorates, with high fluidity.
